This year I was lucky enough to be in the String Orchestra for my fourth year. During the year, I have met many new people and have made many new friends.
The String Orchestra consists of students ranging from age 7 to 13. Most of the students are beginners on their string instruments. In the String Orchestra there are 21 violinists, one viola, one pianist and seven cellos.
This year, due to Covid-19, we couldn’t go and perform at the Te Awamutu Music Festival in Term 3 like we had planned. So, instead, the lovely Mrs McIntyre and Mrs Trenwith planned a special concert for all the music groups in front of the school instead.
Since there are always chocolates and a sausage sizzle at the Te Awamutu Band and Orchestra Festival, Mrs Mclntyre and Mrs Trenwith organized for all the groups to have a sausage, a donut and a chocolate each.

This year the Wind Band was the largest ensemble group at Southwell, with 39 students, ranging from Years 3 to 8. We have had a lot of fun playing music together, and being conducted by the amazing Mrs Trenwith. It has been a wonderful experience.
Wind Band is an auditioned group which consists of utes, clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, trombones, guitars, a wide range of percussion, and even a tuba for the rst time!
2020 has been a crazy year due to Covid-19. We have not been able to have as many performances as usual but the annual Grandparents' Day concert was amazing. Everyone had a great time and the audience loved our performance.
We also had a special performance in front of all the Year 7 and 8s because we weren’t able to go to the Te Awamutu Band and Orchestra Festival. We performed Ghostbusters, The Avengers, Bohemian Rhapsody and Thriller. There was a lot of positive feedback and even delicious food organised by Mrs McIntyre.
Although it has been a crazy year with lots of ups and downs, I have certainly enjoyed being in the Wind Band and hope everyone else has too.
Thank you Mrs Trenwith for making all this happen and I can’t wait to hear what the future Southwell wind bands will play.
