Chess is increasing in popularity at Southwell. The Chess Club, which is held every Tuesday and Thursday, is so popular now that we are using two rooms to accommodate all the chess players.
It is gratifying when the senior players in the school routinely help out at the Chess Club with the much younger children, explaining how the game works and showing them ways to improve the game.
Chess is a great game to play. Not only does it improve strategic thinking, but it allows a player to sit down with someone else who may be completely different to them, and engage in a game.
A record number of pupils have sat, and successfully, passed the New Zealand Chess Federation Levels 1,2,3 & 4 chess exams. It is pleasing to see that chess is increasing its popularity among girls, especially among the younger pupils.
This year Southwell's Junior and Intermediate teams represented the Waikato at the NZ Chess Federation Nationals held in Tauranga. Both teams were quite successful placing in the Top 10. At the end of the rst day’s play Kaedan Govender, our top chess player, was rst overall but unfortunately lost his two matches on the second day. I would like to congratulate the Southwell chess players who represented Waikato at the Nationals for doing their absolute best.
Finally, I would like to thank Mrs Aparna Manda for looking after the Junior team at the Nationals and helping to coach them on a Thursday afternoon.
Per Aspera Ad Astrum.
