              LANGUAGES & CULTURE
We held our breath on Friday 14 August, not knowing if Hamilton was headed back into a Covid-19 Level 3 Lockdown. The continuation of Level 2 brought relief and excitement: Languages Week was on!
First thing on Monday 17 August, student helpers cheerfully hung international ags around the Square, to represent the heritage of Southwell students who have been here in the years since 2012, when the practice began.
We heard The Lord’s Prayer read in several languages in our reduced number Chapel services and Assembly.
Māori was rst, taking a place of honour as the language of the land. To these wonderful students the warmest thank-you:
Mille Whetu (Māori), Sinali Kuruppuge (Sinhala), Amirdha Kanchi (Tamil), Daniel Shen (Mandarin), James Nguyen (Vietnamese), Sukie Feng (French), Sangjoon Lee (Korean), Ishi Singh (Hindi), Cayla Engelbrecht (Afrikaans) and Annemijn van der Heidje (Dutch).
On a wet Wednesday lunch time, the Library was alive with colour and laughter as Mrs Turner supervised Chinese skill activities of all kinds. How good are you at using chopsticks or spinning a silk handkerchief or crafting using origami?
Meanwhile, Year 8 students used their French to order a crêpe and converse with chefs Brendan and Yuli as the PAC kitchen was transformed into the Southwell Crêperie for a day. Everyone gave a thumbs up to these authentic French treats. Délicieux et fantastique!
Food is integral to culture, so in their Library periods students had the task of matching iconic food dishes with their country of origin. Canterbury was the winner of this house competition. Book prize winners were: Olivia Empson (Y5), Poppy McKay (Y6), Zayde Horwod (Y8). In Friday Assembly, a powerful performance by the Kapa Haka rounded off Languages Week in ne style.
Year 7 Chinese classes had another hugely successful day preparing and cooking dumplings, and making conversation in Chinese with their parent support team. Thank you parents for your invaluable help. Year 8s will use their language at the Master House restaurant in Term 4.
