KIDS’ LIT QUIZ
Covid-19 had a huge impact on the Kids’ Lit Quiz year – from the cancellation of the World Final that was scheduled to be hosted by Southwell in July, to the postponement of the New Zealand competition, not once, but twice.
The challenge of selecting eight amazing readers to represent the school out of all the students who want to participate never gets any easier!
In the end though, the teams for the Waikato heat of the Kids’ Lit Quiz were:
Southwell Team 1:
Oliver Jones, Aditya Manda, Iona Martynoga and Frances Gregory.
Southwell Team 2:
Michael Crowther, Evie Sharman, Conor McCormack and Adam Chapman.
These students threw themselves into the challenge of reading widely and enjoyed training sessions that included The Chase and a retro reading party, that celebrated the literature of the 1970s and the 1980s.
Both teams performed extremely well on the day of the Waikato heat, with Southwell Team 2 announced as the winners. Once again, a Southwell team had won the right to represent the region at the National Final in Wellington, continuing a very proud Southwell KLQ legacy.
Michael, Conor, Evie and Adam journeyed to Wellington and took on the best readers from around the country. After a tense battle, the Southwell team were a part of Kids’ Lit Quiz history. They were one of three teams tied for rst place – something that has never happened before in 29 years of the quiz. The three teams that were tied had to endure the agony of a sudden death playoff and our team eventually placed third in New Zealand, which is a truly outstanding achievement. Congratulations to you all and thank you for being such wonderful Southwell ambassadors.
