CRICKET
2020 has been an interesting year all round but cricket at Southwell remains strong. With the usual uctuation of numbers between the start and end of the year we have seen exceptional growth in girls' cricket. We have also been fortunate to get past cricket players, as well as junior players, helping out if and when the need came up. Special thanks to all the parent support and involvement.
The girls have been a pleasure to work with as they bring enthusiasm, spirit and skill to every training and game. The development has been outstanding to see. All of the girls thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the Yeah Girls programme on a weekly basis, developing their game knowledge and skill set with Naomi Matthews from Northern Districts Cricket. Four of our Year 8 players (Maddy Waddell, Greta Darke, Gemma Spice and Georgia Bruton) were selected to play in the Hamilton Junior Girls' Development team, where they played some exceptional cricket. A highlight to wrap up the season was attending the Black Caps vs West Indies test match. The girls had a blast and got to watch some top class cricket.
For the boys, the aim for training sessions has continued to be development and enjoyment. This has seen us splitting our two practices each week so that one was skills-based and the other team-specic. This format allowed all players to benet from working with each of our coaches. Changes to the divisions in Term 4 has allowed players to be tested in many ways. Results have seen more players achieving milestones like scoring 50 or more runs and we have even had a hat-trick or two. In accordance with the Northern Districts directive to change the divisions to mixed ability, our Saturday teams will be separate from our Fixture teams come 2021.
Baggies were awarded to Ishi Singh and Fin Fisher, and other highlights include the annual Major Gay Cup tournament and House Sport in Term 4.
