ART
POTTERY
The theme of Southwell’s Food Glorious Food created decadent cakes and richly painted lolly machine artworks produced in the Art Room and at home.
Year 6 looked at still-life for their vibrant concertina artwork, learning many new art techniques that can be carried over to future art lessons. Students worked on pencil sketching, creating a silhouette, ink and shellac. They completed their final lessons in art working in acrylics.
Year 7 learnt the fundamentals of acrylic painting, creating a beautiful cake painting, Students had fun creating the designs for this and dreaming up delicious flavours. Many layers of colour mixing and mark making were experimented with to complete these works. The paintings proudly went on display in the school gallery.
Year 8 began with a drawing focus looking at the artist Wayne Thiebaud. They then developed their drawings into a painting that they could be proud of. Students learned from home for some of the year and continued to develop their creativity through online learning.
What a wonderful whirlwind this year has been. I congratulate all students for your courage, enthusiastic spirt and love for learning.

In honour of our 100th Opera, Oliver!, we chose the theme Food Glorious Food for Pottery
and Art in 2021.
The Year 6s had an introduction to Pottery by making a licorice pendant which they glazed, fired and strung. Next we moved onto wheel work, making two glazed vessels. We then moved onto a set of three cupcakes on a plate and wee stack of
freshly baked doughnuts.
The Year 7s, while following suit with the pendant and wheel work, made use of the slab roller to make an ice cream stand and then a little set of ice-creams to complete the display. They then moved on to a slice of cake to tie into the Year 8 work of cakes with a slice removed.
The Year 8s, once they had completed the pendant and wheel work, moved onto the challenging theme of making a full sized cake decorated to their choice.
There was plenty of fun alongside plenty of learning but sadly a wee bit of disappointment as lockdown took over and not all work was completed in the latter part of the year.
