2019 was a super year for the Southwell Equestrians beginning with a win at the Waikato Area Primary and Intermediate Schools' Show Jumping at Leamington. It was wonderful to defend this title.
We had nine children participating throughout the year in a wide variety of equestrian disciplines, including Dressage, Show Jumping, Eventing and Show Hunter.
This year was our first away competition where we travelled to Taupo to compete in the North Island Inter-Schools' Show Hunter competition. It was a very challenging and fun event, with a Southwell team coming home with second overall. The event was hosted at our National Equestrian Centre so it was an excellent opportunity for the children to experience our nation's best training facility. We tried out the cross country course and also had the chance to ride in the international indoor arena.
We have a group of children who are keen eventers so they participated in the Auckland Schools' Team Eventers' Challenge hosted during the Puhinui International Three Day Event. The children had the opportunity to ride six to eight show jumps and six to eight cross- country obstacles to an optimum time. They also had the opportunity to see New Zealand’s finest equestrian stars and their horses during the trot-up inspections and the dressage phase held on the same day. It was an amazing event and definitely the most challenging one to date. The Southwell team placed third overall in their category.
We must also acknowledge an outstanding effort by one of our equestrians, Ava Readman. Ava came third overall with her pony Alpha G Wizz in the Cat B Pony title class at Horse of the Year 2019. Congratulations Ava!
