 YEAR 3-4 SYNDICATE
2019 has been another exciting year in our area of the school. This has been very successful due to the hard work and enthusiasm of Mrs Velzian, Mrs Cameron and Miss Sybrandy who have nurtured the children in their care to develop a group of hardworking, well-mannered children who uphold our Southwell values with pride. This is of utmost importance for our children to be good citizens in an ever-changing world.
Year 3 children have worked hard to achieve their values badge and this motivation has transferred into their everyday relationships and work habits.
As always I have been impressed with the high standards the children have set themselves and strove hard to achieve. I can see there are many future leaders amongst our Year 3 and 4 children.
Year 4 had another outstanding production this year. Peter Pan was a hit and allowed every child to participate and showcase their skills.
Our big ideas of Kaitiaki and Who We Are have enabled the children to develop research skills on topics of their choice and to perform a social action within our community.
I would like to pay a special mention to our teacher aides this year who have been working in our classes and also alongside the children.
Thank you to everyone who has been a part of our syndicate in any small way this year.

KAITIAKI : FOOD FOR ALL
Today I'm going to explain how this donation all started.
• We looked at a food pyramid and put in food from our healthy snack.
• We looked at some children from South Sudan who are not as fortunate as us.
• We made vlogs of what we ate over a weekend.
• We looked at some clips of what different countries have for breakfast.
• We looked at places in our community to donate to.
• People came into school to talk to us about their organisation.
Today I'm going to tell you about Southwell's birthday. First let's go back to the past, about 100 years ago in 1920. Every boy who went to Southwell had to make bricks by hand. Here's how they made them. First, the Southwell boys put oil on the brick mould so when the brick was dry and set it would not stick. It helped the brick come out of the mould. After a day or two the bricks will be dry and then the bricks will be perfect. After many years of hard work, our chapel was built. It is still standing today in Southwell School.

JUNIOR HEADMASTER
I am Junior Headmaster for a couple of weeks. It is fun but kind of scary at the same time. I get to wear a cape. Me and Mr Speedy are twins because we have the same capes. I follow Mr Speedy and sit with him. My cape is down to my ankles and is longer than my hand. It is fun on the stage in Assembly but when you have to turn it hurts my neck.

• We made a slideshow of what
we do with our leftover food and an organisation we liked.
• We chose two organizations to donate to.
• We bought food from home as part of our social action...
Amba Wood (3KMD)
Speech given by Amba to Foodbank Hamilton and G.B.B., the two charities we supported as part of our social action. Representatives from these organisations came in to collect our donations.
 YEAR 4 REFLECTIONS
Making Monsters we had to tie dye. We put the calico fabric in the dye for a day. Then we took it out and hung it out to dry. At lunch time Mrs Velzian took them down.
We pinned our eyes, nose, mouth to our fabric then we cut it out and pinned it to our monster and started stitching it on. Once we had stitched all our features on we turned it inside out and used a sewing machine to stitch our two pieces of calico together. We turned it the right way around, put in the stuffing, stitched up the hole at the bottom and added any hair we wanted.
Year 4 has been one of my favourite years and I don’t want to leave. Thank you Mrs Velzian, Mrs Cameron and anyone else who has made this year amazing.
Lizzy Robson (4CV)
Year 4 was a great year for opportunities like the Production, Camp Week and my favourite, Athletics. You get to make so many friends in Year 4.
Charlie Upston (4KC)
In Year 4 we had lots of experiences but my favourite one was Science because we got to do lots of fun, dangerous and interesting experiences. We even studied the human digestion system.
