ENVIRO GROUP
2019 has been a year to once again focus on sustainable practices at Southwell.
At Southwell, we have enthusiastic recycling monitors who ensure that both students, and staff are minimising waste by recycling paper.
Not only do we recycle to reduce waste, but we also collect food scraps for the Southwell worm farms. Our Green Bucket Brigade (Year 5 and 6 students) has been very proactive in helping to ensure students put the correct food into the buckets so that we can keep our population of worms growing.
Another important issue is growing student knowledge of environmental issues and practices. In light of this, a core group of Year 8 students went on several trips that gave them insights into sustainable practices.
These trips were to;
• Arbor Day, held at Waiwhakareke
(a community planting day at which the students performed excellent service.)
• a trip to Rhode Street School, where the students met the amazing 90-year-old Avis Leeson who has spent years donating fruit trees and vegetable seeds to schools.
• Schools’ Enviro Day.
At the Enviro Day, held at Waiwhakareke Sanctuary, the students had the opportunity to venture into the bush and engage with Enviroschools facilitators and people from NIWA, Doc, Hamilton Zoo, GoEco, and Maungatautari Sanctuary. They looked at ways to protect our environment and learnt how all things are connected.
Next year we hope to continue to strengthen our sustainable practices.
