  SCIENCE
Science has been one of the highlights of my time at Southwell. It has helped me understand the basics, through classwork, and then extended my knowledge and interest in science with being able to take part in ICAS and the Science Fair.
Science at Southwell is a unique experience that we are very privileged to have the opportunity to be involved in. At Southwell, we have access to a wide range of apparatus which makes some very interesting experiments possible, along with well-equipped labs to provide the facilities for our journey through Science in Year 7 & 8.
We began Year 8 by studying Electricity over Terms 1 and 2. The experiments were fun and enhanced our practical understanding of Electricity. Half way through Term 1, our learning was interrupted by Lockdown which sadly stopped us doing experiments in the lab but meant we were able to complete more theory work. This helped reinforce our practical knowledge.
In Terms 3 & 4 we studied Chemistry. We were tasked with nding out what chemicals make reworks different colours, which was an awesome experience because it involved heating chemicals on a bunsen burner and recording what colours they made. We then moved on to study atoms and their properties, discovering what makes one atom different from another.
Overall, the best thing about science at Southwell are the amazing teachers. Their level of passion and dedication is what really makes the Southwell Science Department what it is. They offer great support and guidance that really helps everyone understand the world around them better.

I started at Southwell in Year 5 and I am now in Year 6. I love Southwell and I particularly enjoy the things I learn in Science.
Mrs Voss has taught me a lot and I share it with my sisters who tell me that they didn’t do science this cool until Year 10.
For instance last year we learned about the human body and photosynthesis of plants, and this year we have been testing acids and bases. I really like being able to actually do the experiments rather than just learning from books. I have been given a great opportunity at Southwell.
I know with Covid-19 a lot of people hated Lockdown, but I saw it as an opportunity and I did some cool experiments. For one experiment we used cups, hot water, cold water and food colouring. I watched the water currents moving as the hot water came to the top. It was an interesting experiment and I loved it. Science is so much fun and an exciting part of my week.
