                                                         ART AND POTTERY
What a year for Art at Southwell. The theme of Southwell’s Secret Garden saw beautiful ora and fauna artworks created in the Art Room and home.
Year 6 looked at Andy Warhol for their vibrant acrylic ower artworks. They then moved on to paper ower creations, looking to Eric Carle for inspiration. Students completed their nal art lessons with a watercolour focus, learning many new brush techniques that will be carried over to future art lessons.
Year 7 personalised their Art by creating a typography artwork using the rst letter in their name. This artwork helped to develop and extend skills. Students then moved onto acrylic painting creating a beautiful Van Gogh -inspired artwork, layering many textured owers in assorted colours. Once completed they proudly went on display in the gallery.
Year 8 began with a stencil focus looking at local New Zealand Artist, Flox. Students had the opportunity to experience a community paint, where they shared the colours they had mixed. Students then layered stencils to create a series of ower prints. The nal unit of work focused on a large A1 mixed media creation of ora and fauna, where students could show off the skills and techniques they have learnt and developed in Art.
What a wonderful whirlwind this year has been. I congratulate all students for your courage, enthusiastic spirt and love of learning.

The year was all about Floral. Southwell’s Secret Garden was explored by our young artists.
The Year 6s had their introduction to Pottery skills by making bird nests and toadstools.
For Year 7 there were spring owers popping up throughout the gallery and the Year 8s tested all their prior skills to construct a garden house.
Amongst the trials of 2020 we parted with our two old F.E. kilns and purchased two new ones. It’s always a challenge to programme and establish settings on a new kiln and even more so when one gets stuck in Lockdown in England.
I hope every Southwell parent was blessed with a little ceramic gift under their Christmas tree in 2020.
